David is Home

I forgot to mention that my brother arrived safe and sound (and tan) from Israel. He wore the kippah I made for him, just to make me happy. It looked like it weathered well. I was worried that he would be really rough on it and that it would unravel. It does look like it faded a bit though, so that is something to keep in mind if you are using the Lion Brand Microspun yarn in one of your projects.

David in Israel

Well, it looks like it is official: David lost the kippah I made for him. Here he is wearing a blue and white kippah. Oh well. Right now he is at the Kotel celebrating Shabbat. He comes home on Sunday!

UPDATE: I just got off the phone with David and he informed me that he didn’t lose the kippah I made him, he just replaced it with ones he bought in Israel. Hmph. Apparently, men need more than on kippah…

Update on David

Well, now my brother is talking about making aliyah (literally “to go up,” but in this context means moving to Israel). He is also ending his conversations with “L’hitraot v’Shalom” which I believe is the Israeli equivalent of “See ya later; Peace!” He seems really impressed that there are so many Jews and so many people who speak Hebrew. While I am sure he intellectually knew that there are a lot of both in Israel, it must be really weird to go from being an extreme minority in America to being one of the majority in Israel. Anyway, he seems to be having a good time!

I believe these pics are from Masada. David is wearing the grey floppy hat and Marine t-shirt:

The Kippah (and David) is in Israel!

I heard word from my brother last night that they touched down in David Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv Israel. He says it is hot, but other than that he is having a fantastic time. Today they went to the Kotel (the Western Wall of the Second Temple) and my brother brought the tallit (Jewish prayer shawl) that I gave him last Hanukkah and put tefillin (phylacteries) on and prayed there. He says, “It was so touching to be surrounded by hundreds of Jews all praying at one place doing the same thing. The only time I felt such an experience was arriving at Ben Gurion Airport at 4:30 in the morning, listening to the loudspeaker and hearing Hebrew!!!!!!!! It was amazing. . . . I was so happy to be in Israel I rushed off the plane rushed down the cause-way to baggage claim. I love it here.” Please excuse all the exclamation points, I think my brother is really excited to be in Israel. 🙂 I don’t have any photos of the kippah and David in Israel yet, but I will post them as soon as I get them.

The Kippah Has Made it To Majdonek

My brother and the kippah I crocheted for him have made it to the Majdonek concentration camp in Poland. This is what he had to say about the experience, “Majdonek . . . was overwhelming. It was a tiny camp in comparrison to the other concentration camps and it was HUGE. The gas chambers at Majdonek were indescribable. . . . Going there was the first time I have ever felt unsure on my own feet. I felt as though my legs would give out from under me and I was emotionally overwhelmed by the whole experience.”

Well, the kippah I crocheted for my brother has made it to Poland. Here is a picture of my goofy brother eating the “Israeli astronaut food” (my brother’s description) the tour group provides. Take note of his excellent table etiquette. I am sure my mother is so proud.

This is my brother David playing World of Warcraft while wearing the kippah I made for him. He is leaving for Israel on Monday and his old kippah was looking pretty gnarly so I crocheted him a new one. It was pretty easy. I used the Microspun Yarn from Lion Brand. It seemed to work pretty well and gripped his head (which was his only requirement, he has short hair and can’t use a pin to hold the kippah on).
